So what’s male menopause anyway? And does it really exist? All of us have heard of female menopause, but MALE menopause? Naah…
Well, surprisingly, for many, there is now evidence that male menopause does officially exist.
While there was cause for debate earlier, we now have scientific proof. In fact, it even has a scientific term, making it all horribly real. Male menopause, viropause or andropause, if you prefer the scientific terminology, is a condition that occurs in men between the ages of 40 and 55.
It essentially comprises of chemical and hormonal changes in men, and yes, it does affect their sexuality. There are always exceptions, and some men may not experience male menopause until they’re in their late sixties, while others may experience it in their thirties!
Scary, isn’t it?
Well, here's some good news. While men feel that this signifies the beginning of the end, nothing could be further from the truth. Male menopause, in fact, could very well be the beginning of the beginning!
Think about it. The initial years of a man’s life are filled with struggle as he strives to achieve his goals and career aspirations. As he grows older and has realized some of his dreams, he feels more or less settled in life. He’s been there, seen it all, and done it all.
From my experience, the age range is on target. When my husband turned 40, I felt a shift in attitude, but attributed it to business pressures. Now that he's 50, I've recognized this shift as a desire for greater fulfillment beyond work.
One of the reasons I started this blog is because I sensed that there were thousands of men who feel this way. I wanted a place where they could connect. Women already share so many resources. Isn't it about time men shared?
