The key to change is identifying patterns in our life. But, re-evaluating our life choices need not represent the typical "midlife crisis." At midlife, we have more material to work with! In other words, we don't have to throw the baby out with the bathwater (or the spouse in this case.)
Did you know that your personality type can help make navigating a midlife transition easier?
According to Dr. Rob Brandenburg, "Men in midlife re-evaluate, reassess and regroup, but the manner in which a man responds to this instinctive midlife re-evaluation varies according to their personality type.”
Dr. Brandenburg, a Ph.D. graduate at the University of South Australia (UniSA), looked at Sensing-Thinking and Intuitive-Feeling personality types to compare how men deal with the curve balls life throws in middle age. Here's a summary of the two:
The Sensing-Thinking Male
This man tends to base his decisions on logic and analysis of cause and effect. In midlife, he finds himself fulfilled in a material sense but often seeks more meaning from life. His journey is more likely to involve aspiring to a completely new career field.
The Intuitive-Feeling Male
This man may have achieved his career goals but feels disappointed and left wanting. He tends to base his decisions on subjective values. Self-determination and autonomy become more important. He is ripe for starting his own business.
Both groups felt a sense of empowerment at the lifestyle choices open to them, Dr. Bradenburg said.
