As the nation knows by now, Hurricane Ike packed a wallop on Houston and the surrounding area. We've been without power for 11 days. Workers in downtown Houston just returned yesterday. I'm surprised that none of my colleagues suffered any symptoms from electronic withdrawal, myself included. This is the first chance to post since we went dark.
But there is a silver lining. My hovering days are over. My 20-something son, the Quarterlife Kid, who has lived 100 feet away from my kitchen window in a single-story garage apartment for a year, is finally out. Nothing my husband and I said could move him out of his inertia. We had simply given up on the idea that he would be getting on with his life any time in the near future.
Well, it took an act of Nature to force my son out on his own. The hurricane didn't quite do it, but the heavy rainstorm that struck the following day did. His garage apartment flooded!!
Sometimes we have to do nothing until nature takes its course. With every crisis comes opportunity.
The door is always open, but we've had the locks changed.
