I was going to write the traditional year-end post of Top "whatever" and found this post from last December. Technically, it would not have made the 2009 list, but this story was all over the news last week, so I thought I'd post an update instead.
This is a much more heartwarming way to end the year and begin a new decade.
The BringSeanHome Foundation was created solely to support the efforts of David Goldman whose son, Sean, had been abducted and taken to Brazil by his then wife. On December 26, 2009, father, son and grandparents were reunited.

This brings to mind the Kahlil Gibran verse from The Prophet:
On Children
And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, Speak to us of Children.
And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
