I haven’t added new links to the sidebar since December 2009, so I missed the launch of The Good Men Project. Well-written and thought-provoking, the digital magazine challenges the confining cultural norms of what a “real man” should be. Essentially, their goal is to foster a conversation about manhood in all its diversity. They view themselves more as 21st Century thought leaders shepherding an idea-based social platform.
From their website:
“Guys today are neither the mindless, sex-obsessed buffoons nor the stoic automatons our culture so often makes them out to be. Our community is smart, compassionate, curious, and open-minded; they strive to be good fathers and husbands, citizens and friends, to lead by example at home and in the workplace, and to understand their role in a changing world.”
Their motivation for launching a website, which has grown into a multi-faceted media company sounds similar to my desire to applaud and encourage men. For years, I identified more with men than with women.
As a former ad rep for Ms. Magazine, I was intimately familiar with the “gender wars” back in the day. So, I’m happy to see that Ms. loves The Good Men Project too. From humor to how-to, this is a great place to hang out if you’re looking for authenticity and enlightened masculinity.
